Frequently Asked Questions

We’re often asked about how we work, what our trips are like, and what sets us apart. So here goes!
Who runs Whistling Arrow?
Whistling Arrow was founded in 2009 by Adrian Bottomley (your's truly). To this day I remain personally involved in all of the private trips and expeditions that we run: designing every one, and in many cases (including nearly all our scheduled trips and private expeditions) leading and hosting them from the front.
How many expeditions have you designed and led?
I have personally designed, hosted, and led over 50 pioneering expeditions across Asia, including in remote areas of Mongolia, Bhutan, Nepal, China, Northern India and Central Asia. In addition I have custom designed and delivered dozens of private trips for our clients.
Your background is a little different, are you a member of any professional organisations?
That is right. For many years I worked in finance (having graduated from the London School of Economics), but wanderlust and adventure got the better of me! Currently I am a member of The Explorers Club, and a member of the Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA).
Where is Whistling Arrow based?
Whistling Arrow is based in Hong Kong. While we do not operate trips from Hong Kong itself, it serves as our home base for planning and client communication.
How do your scheduled expeditions work?
Well we typically offer 3 or 4 scheduled expeditions a year. These have fixed dates and are limited to a maximum of 5 to 7 guests. I personally lead and host nearly all of them. Only the odd trip is entrusted to our most experienced local guides.
What makes your expeditions different from regular operators?
We are a small, founder-led operation focused on unique and authentic experiences rather than volume. Most of our trips take place in remote areas with very few other travellers. We do not outsource trip design or leadership to local operators. All of our trips have been personally scouted in advance, and many you won't find anywhere else.
What level of fitness is required?
Most of our scheduled expeditions involve moderate trekking at altitude. We can however adjust itineraries for different fitness levels on private trips, and our happy to discuss your requirements in detail before you book.
What about your private trips, are they suitable for families?
Absolutely. We regularly organise private family adventures in Mongolia and Bhutan in particular (both great fits for children), but also in the Stans, Nepal and western China. In fact our family adventures in Mongolia have probably become our signature private trip. All our custom adventures are designed with comfortable pacing and meaningful experiences suitable for a range of ages.
What is the difference between scheduled and private trips?
Scheduled expeditions run on fixed dates with small groups (max 5 to 7 people), and are typically led and hosted by me. Private trips are fully custom-designed for your group (family, friends etc), can be arranged on dates that suit you, and are often led by our most trusted guides.
Can I replicate one of your scheduled expeditions as a private trip?
Yes. Many of our scheduled departures can be taken privately by a single group if the dates work for you, or alternatively we can customise the timing.
How do you manage safety on remote expeditions?
Safety is our top priority. We work with experienced local teams, carry appropriate medical and communication equipment, and have clear emergency protocols. Adrian has over 15 years of experience leading trips in remote environments.
What do you love most about your trips?
I love exploring, recceing and discovering new routes and regions, and of course I get the chance to meet loads of people from different backgrounds (many who turn out to be kindred spirits and become lasting friends).
How do I book a trip?
Best to contact me directly via WhatsApp or email first and have a conversation/discussion so we can understand what you’re looking for and recommend the best option.
Adrian
