I first explored the majestic mountains of Yading (in Sichuan) over 15 years ago now, and pioneered expeditionary-style treks to both circumambulate the three sacred peaks, and explore the wild and spectacular range from the south. On what was our first trip back post-Covid, the client brief had been to design and deliver an exploratory trip into the most beautiful mountains that we knew in western China/eastern Tibet (I was confident that Yading ticked this box), but in a style that drew on the comfortable, fully-supplied expeditions of old (Joseph Rock famously even took a gramaphone). So think, spacious canvas bell tents, comfortable beds, heaters, and good food and wine. What a trip it was; if only the weather Gods had got the full memo!
